As I scroll through my Instagram feed (almost daily) my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE GROUP for moms and "moms-to-be" in the Chattanooga area is FIT4MOM Chattanooga. About two years ago I came across my first post from this group and remember immediate thoughts of, "This looks AMAZING and I have to share with my clients!"
Search @fit4momchattanooga on INSTAGRAM and you will see groups of moms and their babies and toddlers having fun working out together in beautiful parks around Chattanooga. There are currently five locations so you can choose a location that works best for you and your little ones! Dads are even included on Saturdays which are known as "Dadurdays".
When I had the opportunity to meet Fit4Mom Chattanooga co-owner, Rachel McClellan at a Birth Expo last year, I had to HUG her and tell her how much I LOVE WHAT SHE IS DOING FOR NEW MOMS IN CHATTANOOGA! We had previously connected over social media so I could get FIT4MOM information into the hands of my clients ASAP!
Of course I think the exercise component is great, but I saw beyond the workout posts and videos and saw moms lives impacted for the better! I saw community, friendships, support, encouragement. I saw MOMS CONNECTING WITH OTHER MOMS face-to-face on a regular basis and getting in better shape not only physically but emotionally and mentally through a strong social network!
MY JOURNEY AS A NEW MOM 23 YEARS AGO LED ME TO A SIMILAR FITNESS GROUP!
After the birth of my 2nd daughter in 1996 (12 months after the birth of my first) I experienced postpartum anxiety. I had never experienced depression or anxiety and I have to say it was the SCARIEST thing that has ever happened to me to this day! My body was in constant fight-or-flight mode and I had two under the age of two and lived over 700 miles away from family and was adjusting to a new city. After an appointment with a doctor and three to four weeks of letting anxiety medication begin to work, I was encouraged to start exercising regularly. I was actually underweight so getting my pre-baby body back wasn't my motivation. Getting back to my "feel good, normal" was my goal. Jazzercise was the fitness craze in Atlanta during the 1990s so to Jazzercise I went. I took my girls since free childcare was included !
Those group fitness classes were my LIFE-LINE during that season! I made friends, had regular playdates with other moms and kids we met there, felt support and began feeling better than I had in a LONG time! I continued attending regularly throughout my 3rd pregnancy! I felt amazing and went on to have my easiest labor and delivery yet! The group classes provided me with so much more than exercise and I'm confident that is exactly what FIT4MOM Chattanooga is doing in the lives of hundreds of moms in the Chattanooga area!
A recent client reflects on her FIT4MOM experience
One of my labor doula clients in Cleveland, Tennessee this past year has been attending FIT4MOM since September of 2017 when she was expecting her 2nd baby. Dani Seyer says she had always been active but after having her first baby she found it was more difficult to work out because of childcare. When Dani found FIT4MOM she liked the way it fit her life because her daughter was able to go with her! Dani also prefers the mid-morning class since it doesn't affect nap time or the evening fussy time that a new baby can have. "Since I enjoy the outdoors, having classes outside 'does my soul good,'" Dani includes.

The social refreshment of bettering myself WITH other amazing mamas is great. The physical benefits were obvious within two weeks of beginning class. During the first three months of my second pregnancy, I struggled with pelvic floor weakness and incontinence when sneezing and such. After working out for two weeks at FIT4MOM I had no more issues and this continued throughout my pregnancy and following my daughter's birth in March. I contribute this to my weekly workouts with FIT4MOM.
