December is here in full swing! I'm sure your lives and homes are full of Christmas decorating, shopping for those perfect gifts and searching Pinterest for new cookie recipes. Fun times, busy times, hectic times all culminating somewhere between now and the first day of 2017.
Since becoming a labor doula, December has also meant deciding whether or not to take clients due around Christmas. Each year beginning in late spring the calls, e-mails and inquiries for late December births come in and my first inclination is to set up an interview with hopes of getting hired, then my gut twists a bit as I ask myself if I really want to be on-call or at a birth on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. I don't think I'm alone on this but I don't like how this makes me feel. I'm passionate about what I do and the decision to not take a birth because of a due date doesn't feel very heart-centered to me! If you've been a doula for longer than a year I'm sure you've witnessed doula groups in your area referring out late December clients looking for doula support. This week I wouldn't doubt several of you will see these requests if you haven't already.
As a doula and mother I respect each and every decision you may make regarding how you feel about being on-call and available during any holiday or special occasion you may have on your calendars. We give so much and need to set boundaries for family and self-care.
Regardless of your decisions remember that what you do throughout the year is making a difference for many families. In the "Doula World" we are collectively making a difference in births around the globe!
The remainder of this post is specifically for those of you who will be on-call and supporting birth(s) this holiday season. My hope is that when "that call" comes or you're in the middle of supporting a birth you take a moment to read through the following to keep a positive perspective:
- after the birth you can go home, rest and be ready to enjoy the next holiday event
- the 1st Christmas was all because of a BIRTH--what a cool reminder!
- the family you're supporting is aware of your sacrifice
- this mom and her partner will remember you forever
- YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE BY BEING AT THIS BIRTH ON THIS DAY
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL DOULAS
I'M SO BLESSED TO HAVE YOU AS PART OF MY DOULA COMMUNITY & LOOK FORWARD TO ALL THAT 2017 HOLDS FOR ALL OF US
